Seduce your visitors!
21 February 2023Increase the number of requests, reservations, registrations, or orders via your website without many technical adjustments. Don't you want that too?
Improve your website so that potential customers are convinced of your product or service faster. Guide visitors to a purchase with the principles of "online persuasion" (in other words, seducing on the internet).
As a website owner, you are convinced that your product or service is the best! But how do you convince the visitor of this? The answer lies in the six principles of “Online Persuasion”. These principles are based on psychological research on persuasion. (R.B. Cialdini 2001).
In this blog, we tell you about the first 2 principles, Reciprocity and Commitment & consistency.
1. Reciprocity
When a good friend gives you a gift or, for example, helps you move, you are more likely to give them a gift in return or offer them your help sooner. It creates a kind of sense of debt that you can get rid of by doing something back. Sometimes these feelings can be ignored, but they will never disappear.
Giving something away creates a sense of debt
We know that offering free products is the way to attract more customers. Think, for example, of free workshops, seminars, or corporate gifts. But free newsletters can also create this feeling in the recipient.
Naturally, the value of this free product or service and its spontaneity determine the strength of the feeling of debt. Someone will be more inclined to do something back for you when you give a free 3-hour training session, for example, than when you mail them a short instruction on an A4 sheet.
2. Commitment & consistency
People determine their behavior based on what they have said or done before. We like to be consistent.
For example, there is a group of scientists who ask all residents of two streets in a neighborhood for permission to place a giant municipal sign in their front yard with the text: “Drive carefully”. In street 1, 83% of the people refuse; in street 2, only 27%. Why this remarkable difference?
Create commitment step by step
In street 2, the scientists had gone door-to-door a few weeks earlier to sow “commitment”. The residents were asked if they would like to place a small sign in their garden with the text: “Be a safe driver”. Almost no one refused this request. To be consistent with their “commitment” to road safety that had just been created, 73% gave permission two weeks later to also place the giant sign in their garden.
The trick is therefore to create commitment with potential customers step by step.
