All G-facts in a row

12 April 2022

In the blog 3G stops, it may have seemed like everything started with 2G, but that is certainly not the case. 1G also existed. And did you know that the 'G' stands for Generation?

Since the early 1980s, a new generation of mobile telephony has appeared about every 10 years. Below are all the G-facts listed!

All G-facts in a row

1G - 1980

In the early 1980s the first wireless phone for home use appeared. A large handset that used analog radio signals. 1G was voice-only, so you could only make calls. It had no data capabilities, sending SMS was not possible. Expressed in speed it could reach 2.4Kbps (Kilobits per second).

2G - 1991

2G brought us SMS and MMS from 1991 and is fully digital, moreover encryption was possible, speeds from 50Kbps to 1.3Mbps depending on the technology (GPRS, EDGE and EDGE+).

3G - 1998

With 3G we had mobile broadband for the first time, speed varied from 348Kbps to 42.2Mbps depending on the technology (UMTS/WCDMA, HSPA, HSPA+ and DC-HSPA+) and data and voice could now be used separately. This made it possible to call and use the internet simultaneously.

4G - 2008

With 4G everything goes even faster! Speeds up to about 1Gbps stationary and 100Mbps moving. Even faster internet to watch videos on the go. This connection is also much more stable than the 3G network.

5G - 2016

With 5G theoretical speeds up to 1Tbps can be achieved, but in practice you can currently assume about 1Gbps. More importantly, delays have been reduced.
