VoLTE in the Netherlands: calling via the 4G network
30 April 2019It has recently become possible to use VoLTE. That is calling via the 4G network.
Before that time, you always called over the 2G or 3G network. That means your phone always had to switch back from 4G to 3G if you wanted to make a call. Thanks to VoLTE, calls sound better and the connection is established faster.
In the Netherlands, there are currently three mobile providers with a 4G network, namely KPN, T-Mobile & Vodafone. Those are therefore the providers that can offer VoLTE.
It has recently become possible to enable VoLTE on your mobile phone, provided you are connected to one of the three mobile providers, have a compatible device, and have the latest operating software installed on your mobile phone.
Some advantages of calling via 4G
- Lightning-fast calls: you call via a higher connection speed. It only takes 1 to 2 seconds for the phone of the person you are calling to ring.
- Talking as if you are standing next to each other with HD Voice: you hear the voice on the other end of the line much more clearly.
- Stable connection: the sound is not only clearer, but the connection is also much more stable. The connection during your phone call hardly ever drops out anymore.
- Multitasking: while you are calling, you can continue to use the internet on the 4G network.
Some disadvantages:
- If you want to benefit from optimal call quality, both conversation partners must have VoLTE with the same provider.
- VoLTE is not supported abroad. If you call with your Dutch subscription from abroad, the 2G or 3G network will be used as usual.
