Why do we like, comment and share?

25 August 2018

It makes us happy! When someone leaves a comment or likes or shares something of yours, something happens in a certain area of our brain; it makes us happy. Even when we view profiles of friends, we can get a feeling of happiness from it.

Why do we like, comment and share?

Why we share

  • To be able to show (important) information to friends
  • To show ourselves
  • To maintain our relationships
  • To call attention to something we care about

Why we react

Because we also want to say something!

Why we update our status

We feel less lonely; we also want likes just like our friends to belong.

Why we like

  • Because you can easily and quickly show that you like something
  • To confirm something about ourselves
  • To show our empathy
  • Because we sometimes get something in return or can win something

The psychology behind the likes

We are subconsciously influenced by the like button. If many people like something, then it must be true. The more people do something, the more we start doing the same (this is called social proof).

What we are ultimately doing is creating our own (online) identity!
