Retina, resolution and pixel density

11 January 2017

The image you see on a screen is created by pixels. PIXELS = is the combination of the words Picture Elements. Nowadays, we view websites on various devices. With each device, we have a different goal and different needs. One time you want to quickly find a phone number, the other time you want to watch a video and experience the atmosphere or book a trip.

Retina, resolution and pixel density

There are many different (display) resolutions

All the different devices have different resolutions. The resolution of a screen is displayed as the number of pixels in the width of the screen X the number of pixels in the height of the screen (1024 x 768 px) or (1280 x 1024 px) or (1920 x 1080 px). A resolution is the number of pixels on the screen. Because the resolution says nothing about the sharpness of a screen, we look at the pixel density (expressed in PPI).

Pixel density

PPI = the resolution of the screen divided by the size of the screen. Letters, lines and images are therefore sharper with a higher PPI.

Pixel density and viewing distances

You can rotate a tablet and a mobile phone screen and you also hold them closer to your face than a laptop screen, so you see pixels faster.

Retina

RETINA standard = a term coined by Apple. According to Steve Jobs, the perfect pixel density. Above this, the human eye would no longer be able to distinguish individual pixels. This therefore differs per screen and how far away you are from it.

More pixels is not always better!

The PPI is getting higher and higher; this sometimes costs unnecessary battery consumption of the device. All pixels are driven by the processor and that costs energy.

Letters not easily readable?

Often a screen has a default resolution that best fits the display. Yet there is sometimes a disadvantage to a high resolution: the letters on a website become too small and not easily readable.

  • You can set your browser setting to, for example, 110%.
  • You can also choose a lower resolution on your device. However, this is not as sharp and the image becomes blurry.
  • You can use the recommended resolution from your display settings; in Windows, you may need to set the text size to 125%.
