How does a hacker enter a home workplace?

Hackers can easily break in at home when the security of your computer or laptop is not in order and you do not know what the risks are. The tips below can help you make it a lot harder for hackers.

10 tips for safe working from home (data secure)

1. Ensure (automatic) updates!
   It is important that your computer or laptop is up-to-date! Software updates ensure secure devices. This does not only apply to software on your pc or laptop; your phone, apps on your phone, Smart TV and for example your smart thermostat must also be updated regularly to prevent an internet criminal from spying on you, stealing your data or taking over your device.
2. Good virus scanner
   Ensure you have an up-to-date virus scanner installed, a malware scanner and a firewall.
3. Network and wifi security
   Both the home network and the wifi must be well secured with a username and password. If this is not the case, any passer-by can access company data via the employee's computer.
4. Encryption
   Ensure the hard drive is protected with encryption, so that if the laptop or pc is stolen, the files on the disks are not visible without the correct code. This is done with, for example, Bitlocker, but there are also other programs.
5. Prevent phishing
   A Phishing email is a fake email from internet criminals to mislead you. Often the email looks reliable, but if you pay close attention you will see that it is a forgery. 
6. Good password management
   Ensure passwords are complex, making them not easy to guess. There should be no pattern in them and it is best to have a password generated with a password generator and don't forget to use different passwords everywhere.
7. Two steps verification when working in the cloud
   Also known as: two-step authentication. This means you always need 2 ways to gain access to a service. Often with a password and with a code generated on your mobile (or sent via SMS). This makes it much harder for the hacker.
8. Being able to remote wipe and back up data!
   In case of loss or theft of a phone or laptop, it is possible to remotely wipe sensitive data.
   It is important that you perform regular backups!
9. VPN connection
   Use a VPN connection to contact the company's server via the home work computer. All internet traffic goes through a secure, encrypted connection.
10. Awareness
    Keep employees informed of cybercrime possibilities. Hacks and data leaks are often the result of lack of knowledge of the employees. If they know which techniques internet criminals can use, they know what to watch out for!
