It is handy that we always have a video camera at hand. Especially now that video calling is becoming more normal, but of course also for vacations when you want to capture beautiful moments.
But did you know that hackers can also use the webcam to film you?
Who can peek through your webcam?
A hacker can use the webcam on your laptop, tablet or phone to film you without you noticing. When we film, you normally see from the light that the camera is filming. Do you see that and are you not filming yourself? Then you can be sure you are being hacked. But this light can also be turned off by a hacker. So you can't always see it!
Why would a hacker want to hack your webcam?
- To see if you are at home
- To make a video of you and blackmail you with it. It may be that you are just unfavorably on camera, or that something is filmed that you would like to keep private. You especially don't want it to go viral on the internet.
- To see what password you type during online banking
What can you do to prevent hacking?
- Close your laptop when you are not using it (keep phone and tablet in a case)
- Disable your webcam when you are not using it (in the operating system of your device)
- Ensure updates for your operating system and apps
- Install a good Firewall
- Ensure a virus scanner
- Ensure a good VPN connection
- Watch out for Phishing mail
- Be careful with free Wifi
- Cover the webcam or use a webcam cover
