Google’s Page Experience Update
08 January 2021Google has announced the Page Experience update that will be rolled out this year, in this update 3 new ranking factors are considered. With this update the user experience of your website becomes even more important.
User experience becomes even more important!
Searching websites and webshops via search engines remains important in 2021 and good search engine optimization (SEO) still generates many leads and sales. Google will soon measure the user experiences of website visitors and express them in numbers. The update is intended to further improve a visit to a website. These figures will also become important for ranking, the position of websites in the search engine.
The 3 new ranking factors of the Page Experience update:
- Perceived loading speed of the website (LCP: Largest Contentful Paint)
The faster a website loads, the faster the visitor can do something. How long visitors have to wait before they see the largest element of the website (no longer than 2.5 seconds). - Interaction response (FID: First Input delay)
The time between the first action of the visitor and the response by the webpage. This should be under 100ms, a site then responds immediately to the visitor’s interaction. If a visitor quickly gets a response, the usefulness of the webpage increases. If a response takes too long, the visitor will leave the website frustrated. - Cumulative layout shift (CLS: Cumulative Lay-Out shift)
This is the value of shifting visible content and elements on a webpage. If this is not good, the action the visitor is performing can be disrupted and the website is not user-friendly (ideally under 0.1). You often encounter this on websites with many ads. When you click on a certain link, it may be that the ad is also loaded and the text shifts, causing you to accidentally click on a completely different link.
The update is expected in May 2021.
