What does Wero mean for your website or webshop?
25 November 2025Wero: the new European payment system will soon become the digital payment method in the Netherlands and Europe. For everyone used to paying online with iDEAL, this means a transition that will mainly bring extra convenience.
iDEAL becomes Wero
From January 2026 online payments in the Netherlands will change: iDEAL disappears and makes way for Wero. This new European payment system was developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and is supported by sixteen major banks, including the Dutch banks behind iDEAL. Wero is already active in Belgium, Germany and France, and will roll out in the Netherlands from 2026.
What changes for you as an entrepreneur?
For entrepreneurs little actually changes when switching to Wero. The migration to the new payment system largely happens automatically via the bank and the webshop. As an entrepreneur you basically don’t have to take complicated steps, because the iDEAL providers ensure everything is transferred safely and smoothly. However, it is smart to inform your customers about the new logo and the extra functionalities Wero offers, so they know what to expect.
The payment experience as a user changes little. You put your products in the shopping cart, choose Wero, confirm the payment via your bank and you’re done. The big difference is that instead of the iDEAL environment you now end up in the Wero environment. Later functions will be added, such as peer‑to‑peer payments, refunds, subscriptions and payment requests.
Does the transition happen automatically?
The transition to Wero takes place in two phases. From the end of January 2026 you will see both logos appear side by side and iDEAL payments will slowly be transferred to Wero. In the second phase the new functionalities will be added.
