HELP! I am not reachable for customers!

07 December 2021

A DDoS attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt a server, online service or website by sending an overload of traffic to the website or web application, making it harder or no longer accessible. When an attack is ongoing, it is difficult to stop.

HELP! I am not reachable for customers!

Communication with customers and employees hindered by DDoS attack

Customer portals, website services and web applications are very important. With a DDoS attack the cybercriminal wants to hinder communication between users (customers, employees) and the target (customer portal, website, online application, server). The goal is to make it unreachable, disrupt or irritate, without obtaining information.

Paying Bitcoins to stop an attack?

A DDoS attack often has no intention of retrieving information, only to disrupt it. Criminals attack for a long time and only stop when ransom is paid (in Bitcoins). Threat letters are also sent in advance to pay to prevent a DDoS attack. Of course, never do this!

How long does an attack last?

Usually an attack lasts a few hours, but it can certainly happen that attacks last for days.

How do you recognize a DDoS attack?

  • The network becomes unusually slow
  • The online system is not (properly) accessible
  • Routers are unreachable

Can a firewall stop a DDoS attack?

A good firewall, switch and router can block and protect traffic, but in a DDoS attack the firewall is often also unreachable. Once the attack enters the network, you can no longer access it.

Infracom DDoS protection

We have a monitor in our data center that recognizes whether the incoming traffic is safe. If the DDoS is recognized, that specific traffic is blocked and redirected. All other traffic still comes through.
