Can you prevent a DDoS attack?
22 February 2022We have talked about it more often: DDoS attacks. Due to an overload of traffic to an IP address, computer systems (computer, server, network) become harder or no longer accessible. This results in a Denial-of-Service for normal traffic.
Usually an attack lasts a few hours, but sometimes attacks can last for days.
Denial-of-Service (DoS)
A DoS is a situation in which a computer system is no longer available to the user.
Distributed-denial-of-service attacks (DDoS attacks)
These are attacks aimed at disrupting a computer or network. The attack does not come from one host, but is carried out in a distributed manner. The attack comes from multiple hosts (botnet).
Attacks on web applications (application layer attack)
In an application layer attack a specific application or vulnerability in it is targeted. This is not about a large amount of traffic, but targeted commands are sent to applications to make them unavailable to users.
HTTP Flood
This DDoS attack can be compared to continuously refreshing the web browser on many computers simultaneously, leading to a Denial of Service. The website or web application is no longer accessible to visitors.
What can you do to prevent DDoS attacks?
An attack cannot be prevented. However, it is possible to monitor internet traffic and detect attacks. When an attack is detected, traffic can be diverted (rerouted via an anti-DDoS center). The traffic is then “cleaned”. The clean traffic returns and the dirty traffic is discarded.
