What is WCAG?

16 September 2025

WCAG stands for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. This is the international standard to make the internet accessible to everyone. It is also the standard referred to in Dutch legislation regarding accessibility. It is essentially a list of requirements for designing, building and managing digital applications such as websites, webshops and web applications. An example of such a rule is that images must always be provided with a descriptive alt text, so that people who cannot see what is in an image can still understand the content.

What is WCAG?

4 principles

The WCAG consists of different levels (A, AA, and AAA) and about 50 requirements that are divided into 4 principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable and Robust.

An example of the guidelines

  1. Perceivable: the website (or webshop or web application) is clearly visible and audible:
    • Alternative texts for images, icons and buttons
    • Subtitles or transcripts for videos and audio
    • Scalable text (up to 200%)
    • Sufficient color contrast between text and background
    • No text in images, or also provide the text as regular text
  2. Operable: the website (or webshop or web application) is easy to operate:
    • All functions can be operated with a keyboard
    • Clear focus indicators, for example a border around active elements
    • Content must not move automatically
    • No flashing content
    • Clear page titles
  3. Understandable: the content of the website (or webshop or web application) and the interaction are predictable and logical:
    • Simple language, avoid jargon and explain difficult concepts
    • Consistent and logical navigation
    • Clear links
    • Buttons with descriptive texts (not just “click here”)
    • Forms with labels at input fields and error messages
    • Clear error messages with explanation
  4. Robust: the website (or webshop or web application) works well on different browsers, also in the future:
    • Correct HTML structure
    • Support for screen readers
